There are three main types of validation: Domain Validation (DV), Organization Validation (OV), and Extended Validation (EV).
1. Domain Validation (DV)
The Certificate Authority (CA) verifies ownership through simple checks, such as:
-
Email verification to a domain admin like admin@, webmster@, postmaster@, hostmaster@ and administrator@.
-
Adding a specific DNS record.
-
Uploading a file to the website.
2. Organization Validation (OV)
-
Domain ownership (like DV).
-
Organization details via government or business registries.
-
Contact verification via phone or official email.
3. Extended Validation (EV)
Provides the highest trust by rigorously verifying the organization. The CA performs extensive checks, including:
-
Legal, physical, and operational existence.
-
Confirming the organization’s authority to request the certificate.
-
Verifying identity documents and direct contact.
Please note that the CA may require some extra steps to validate your SSL Certificate.
