SSL certificates used to last 5 years. Then 1 year. Soon, just 47 days.
Starting March 2026, certificate lifespans will shrink in stages:
Why is this happening?
If a certificate gets stolen or wrongly issued, a shorter lifespan limits the damage. Less time valid = less time for attackers to exploit it. It also forces better habits — less copy-pasting, less forgetting, more automation.
Will this cost more?
No. You still buy a certificate once. Reissuing it is free for the entire year.
